PostDoc Francesca Savoldi and local research partner Dian Wahyu Utami initiated field site research in Muara Angke.

The fishing village of Muara Angke, located in the Penjaringan Subdistrict, is located around the Muara Angke port, with residents working in the fisheries sector, including fish finders, fish dryers, fish trading, and cleaning shellfish. The Processing Center for Traditional Fisheries Items (PHPT) also produces salted fish, shrimp paste, and smoked products. The coastal area of Jakarta is the focus of study in this paper, which is one of the focuses of urban development in Jakarta. Coastal areas in Jakarta have experienced massive development, especially in terms of housing and housing. During 2000-2020, there have been more than 1185 hectares of land reclamation, housing development, and port development. The coastal city of Jakarta, especially Muara Angke, is the center of the fishing industry and fishermen on the islands of Java and Bali. The government has built various kinds of supporting facilities for the fishing industry, such as fishermen’s housing, fish freezing centers, fish buying and selling centers, and fish markets. In addition, to realize a developed and sustainable coastal city of Jakarta, the Indonesian government has also built various facilities such as port construction, construction on reclamation islands, and construction of flats for fishermen.
